You sit down in the evening, or settle into bed, and your legs will not let you rest. There is a crawling, pulling or fizzing feeling deep in the calves. The only thing that eases it is getting up and moving, until you lie down again. Acupuncture for restless legs is something many Adelaide people try when the evenings have become a battle and sleep is suffering for it.

What Restless Legs Syndrome Is

Restless legs syndrome (RLS, also called Willis-Ekbom disease) is an urge to move the legs. An odd sensation that is hard to describe usually comes with it. The pattern is recognisable: it starts when you are still, it eases when you move, and it is worse in the evening and at night. Some people also have small jerking leg movements in their sleep, which a bed partner notices before they do.

Sometimes there is an identifiable driver: low iron stores, pregnancy, kidney disease, nerve damage in the feet, or a medicine. Often there is no single cause and it runs in families. Medical care starts by checking those drivers, particularly iron, and may include medication when symptoms are frequent. The Sleep Health Foundation has a clear guide to restless legs syndrome.

Check the Basics With Your Doctor First

Before anything else, ask your doctor whether your iron stores have been checked. A standard blood count can be normal while the stored iron (ferritin) is low. That is one of the most common and fixable contributors to restless legs. Kidney function, thyroid and blood sugar are also worth a look.

Bring a list of everything you take. Some antidepressants, sedating antihistamines and anti-nausea medicines can aggravate restless legs. Even so, please do not stop any prescribed medicine without talking to your doctor. Already on medication for restless legs? If the symptoms start earlier in the day or spread to your arms, tell your doctor. That pattern needs a medical review. Acupuncture for restless legs sits alongside all of this, not in place of it.

How an Acupuncturist Reads Restless Legs

In traditional practice the muscles and sinews need to be nourished by blood to stay soft and settled. When that nourishment runs low, the sinews become twitchy and uneasy. They are at their worst at night, when the body should be drawing inward to rest. That picture fits what we see in the clinic. Restless legs is common after heavy periods, during pregnancy, with age, and in people who are run down.

It is not the only picture. Some people run hot at night, with burning feet and a busy mind. Others have legs that feel heavy, achy and cold, with sluggish circulation. Working out which you are comes first. Acupuncture for restless legs is planned quite differently for each.

Which Kind of Restless Legs Do You Have?

Most people recognise themselves in one of these, and it changes how we treat you.

Tired and depleted

Worse when you are exhausted, often with pale skin, light-headedness, numbness or tingling, and sleep that never quite refreshes. Common after pregnancy, heavy periods or illness.

Hot and agitated at night

Feet or legs feel hot and you push them out from under the covers. The mind races too, and night sweats or menopause symptoms may be part of it.

Heavy, achy and cold

The legs feel heavy and aching, worse when sitting still and in cold weather, better with warmth and a walk. Often comes with lower back or hip stiffness.

What We See People For

Restless legs rarely arrives alone. People usually come to us with some combination of:

  • Crawling, pulling, fizzing or aching deep in the calves when sitting or lying down
  • Having to get up and walk around at night to settle the legs
  • Jerking leg movements in sleep that wake you or your partner
  • Trouble falling asleep, and tiredness and poor concentration the next day
  • Restless legs in pregnancy, when many medicines are off the table
  • Restless legs alongside menopause, night sweats or a racing mind at bedtime
  • Leg cramps, numbness or tingling in the feet, or lower back and hip stiffness

What Acupuncture for Restless Legs Involves

What we use depends on your pattern and on what you are comfortable with:

  • Acupuncture. Fine, single-use needles in the lower legs, feet and elsewhere on the body, chosen for your pattern rather than a fixed recipe. Most people find the sessions deeply relaxing, and some doze off on the table
  • Electro-acupuncture. A very gentle current between two needles in the legs, used where the muscles feel tight and achy
  • Moxibustion and warming. For legs that feel heavy and cold, to bring warmth and circulation back into the lower limbs
  • Ear acupuncture or ear seeds. Small points on the ear, often used to calm the nervous system for sleep, which you can keep stimulating at home
  • Chinese herbal medicine. A prescription matched to your pattern, supporting the work between visits. We check it against everything else you take
  • Laser acupuncture. The same points without needles, which suits anyone needle-shy and many pregnant patients

Your First Appointment

Your first appointment runs at an unhurried pace. Expect questions about when the restlessness starts each day, what it feels like and what eases it. Your sleep matters, and so do the tests and medicines your doctor has already tried. Periods, pregnancy, digestion and energy come into it too, because they shape the pattern. After checking your pulse and tongue in the traditional way, we explain what we think is going on and start treatment the same day. See what happens on your first visit, or our consultation fees.

Acupuncture for Restless Legs Is Planned Around You

Restless legs behaves very differently from one person to the next, so there is no standard plan. Legs that play up twice a week after a long day are a different problem from years of walking the hallway every night. A pregnant patient is in a different place again.

So your plan takes shape after we have seen you. You will leave the first appointment knowing what we suggest and why. Each session runs around 45 minutes to an hour. As your evenings and sleep change, the treatment changes with them. You will always hear plainly how acupuncture for restless legs is tracking for you.

When to See a Doctor

Restless legs itself is not dangerous, but some leg symptoms are. Please see a doctor promptly if you notice:

  • One leg that is swollen, hot, red or painful, especially after a long trip or surgery. This needs same-day assessment to rule out a blood clot
  • Weakness in a leg or foot, or numbness that is spreading
  • Leg pain when walking that eases with rest, or cold, pale feet
  • Restless legs that started after a new medicine
  • Symptoms that have started appearing earlier in the day or in your arms while on treatment
  • Extreme daytime sleepiness, loud snoring or pauses in breathing at night
  • Low mood that is getting worse because of the lack of sleep

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture for restless legs help?

Many people find their evenings calmer and get to sleep more easily. Responses vary from person to person. We review your progress and tell you plainly if it is not helping.

Is restless legs the same as leg cramps?

No. A cramp is a painful, hard tightening of the muscle that you can feel. Restless legs is an urge to move with an odd sensation, eased by moving. Many people have both, and we ask about each.

Can I have acupuncture for restless legs while pregnant?

Yes. Restless legs is common in pregnancy. We treat pregnant patients at every stage, using points suited to pregnancy. Needle-free laser is available too. Please let your midwife or doctor know about the restless legs, as an iron check is especially relevant in pregnancy.

I already take medication for restless legs. Can I still come?

Yes. Acupuncture sits alongside your medication. Please do not change or stop anything prescribed without your doctor.

Is it safe if I do not like needles?

Yes. Laser acupuncture treats the same points with no needles at all, and our needles are very fine. Tell us what you are comfortable with and we work within it.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online or by phone. Bring any recent blood test results, especially iron studies, if you have them.

Can I claim on private health?

Many extras policies cover acupuncture, and we can give you a receipt for your fund. Cover varies, so please check your own policy. See our consultation fees.
